Hospital, Health, and Addiction Workers Group

The Hospital, Health & Addiction Workers, Patients and Families working group of the COVID-19 Psychology Task Force (established by 14 divisions of the American Psychological Association) seeks to reduce COVID-related psychological trauma, especially in medical and addiction settings, and to facilitate coping, resilience, and even post-traumatic growth.

We seek to reach those facing grief and loss, anxiety, depression, vicarious trauma, moral injury, compassion fatigue, suicide, and other negative psychological sequelae of the pandemic.

Our group members are all:

• Members of the Trauma Division of the American Psychological Association (APA)
• Experts in Psychological Trauma in medical, healthcare, addiction, or other clinical settings.

Co-chairs:

Maureen O’Reilly-Landry, Ph.D., Founder and Co-chair

Dr. O’Reilly-Landry is a clinical psychologist, psychoanalyst, and couple therapist with expertise in psychological trauma in medical settings and the interpersonal aspects of modern medicine. She co-chairs the Psychoanalysis and Healthcare Committee of the Society for Psychoanalysis and Psychoanalytic Psychology (APA). Her edited book, A Psychodynamic Understanding of Modern Medicine was deemed "essential reading" by Contemporary Psychotherapy. She is on the clinical faculty in the Psychiatry Department of Columbia University Irving Medical Center in New York City.

Patricia A. O’Gorman, Ph.D., Co-chair

Dr. O’Gorman is a clinical psychologist and addiction and trauma specialist. She is a speaker, author of 9 books on resilience, trauma, and addiction, including The Resilient Woman and Healing Trauma Through Self-Parenting. She is the Consulting Psychologist for St. Joseph’s Addiction and Treatment and Recovery Centers and on the board of Sober St. Patrick’s Day. She is former Director of the Division of Prevention for the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) and cofounded The National Association for Children of Addiction.
